Multiflex Update

I’ve been plodding along slowly (read frustratingly) with the Multiflex theme for WordPress. Wolfgand the designer has done a great job with the design. It looks fantastic. When it is done I am planning on using a customised version of it here on my site.

So far I have got a basic theme but there is still a lot of work to do. It may take me a while to finish but I think it will be worth waiting for, at least I hope so!

It really is a very complex template. It’s so complex, I’m not sure what to use all the navigation levels for but never mind, I shall work something out.

As have said before I think I will be struggling to keep the drop down menus that Wolfgang has made for the main menu. It is a shame because they are really sweet, but so far I haven’t found a way to convince the WordPress pages function to output the code needed to display these consistently across different browsers. I am going to leave them to one level for now as I have wasted so much time on trying to get them to work with little progress that I could have finished a first version of the theme by now.

As soon as I get something worth looking at I shall put a demo up for testing. I’ll keep you informed :-)

Sorry Ainslie that you feel frustrated with my template Multiflex-3. Well, you wonder what to do with all those navigation levels. The reason I put in them there was that I wanted to leave it up to the user to decide which levels he wants to use, it was just to give different options, but not intending that all should be used in the one and same application of the template. For example, one may delete the drop-downs and and only work with one of the three offered side navigations, or on the other hand drop all the side navigations and only work with the drop-downs (but they are messy, that is why I have done six updates because there was always the one or other browser messing things up. I love those drop-downs, but think I will forget them as well in my future templates, the browsers are just too tricky too support them in a safe and reliable way). One interesting way would be to use the top level navigation (without drop-down function) and the first sidelevel navigation (with the block shadings when hovering over them). I think those two levels would be fine to stick with, and would make it much more easier to port.

Multiflex-3 is not to be seen as a template to use as is, but as a collection of many options, from which the user picks the ones he would like to use on his website or in his porting of the template. That is true not only for the navigations, but also for all the other options. The idea was to provide many options that are styled in harmony with the template, so the user can pick what he wants, without having to add further style options of his own and maybe having trouble to make it fit the general theme style. It is a “pick and chosse what you need” template, not a “use as delivered “template. In this way, the user himself decides how complex or easy the template will be in his application of the template, by keeping or deleting various options.

Thanks for keeping going Ainslie!! If you have any questions, you know that you can get in touch with me any time!!

No need to say sorry! WordPress is great but it is not always easy to fit things like the drop-downs. It is not your template!

I think I shall keep 1 level in the horizontal menu and then put sub-pages in the top of the right sidebar, like you have suggested.

  5. Wolfgang Says:

These drop-downs are tricky. Now in the latest browser of Opera (Opera 9.10) the drop-downs suddenly do not work properly, as they did in the previous version Opera 9.0.2. Everything was OK finally, and now this …

… but now a fix was found, so Multiflex-3 is up and running better than ever … now with Update-7.

    Hey Guys:

I’ve been lurking here the last week or so.. 8-)

Really love the look of MultiFlex3 and am looking forward to hear it’s good-to-go for WP. Not so concerned about the drop-down menu’s (they are slick tho.) at first, perhaps that could be part of rev.2 update? Meanwhile, will be checking in to see when it’s available.

Thanks for all your efforts on this worthy project!

I’m also looking forward to a WordPress version of the theme. Although I like the drop-down menus, I wouldn’t have a problem sacrificing them for the side navigation bar.

  9. Philip Says:

I’ll echo what Lars said about the drop down menus not being critical for a blog implementation of multiflex. They are definitely cool, but not mission critical.

Looking forward to a WordPress theme of MultiFlex! Thanks for all the opensource good will guys!

    :-)

Ainslie, cheers for the New Year 2007 and all the best success for your Multiflex-3 porting!!

I did warn you it might be a while! Thanks for the kind comments and feedback.
