WordPress 2.1 is Out

WordPress 2.1 is now available for download from the WordPress site. There are a number of useful improvements in the new version that make this a worthwhile upgrade. However, there might also be one or two bugs that I will come to later.

Some of the best improvements are to the post editor that now features auto saving of posts, a new code editor tab and a spellchecker. There is also the ability to set any page is the homepage and set another page to a hold your blog posts making WordPress more of a CMS that it has been before. To see all the improvements check out the WordPress development blog.

One feature that seems to have been a little controversial is combining the link categories with the blog categories. This seems to be causing some people quite a few problems and is why my links page has disappeared for the time being. From what I can tell the normal sidebar code for the links should work, but but if you have customised code that shows specific link categories by ID you may have problems.

As always, I suggest you make a full backup of your database before going ahead with the upgrade just in case you experience problems as you will not be able to downgrade. Instead you will have to reinstall WordPress 2.0.7 and restore your database to get back as you were.
