The Importance of Categories

Last night I went through every post on my blog checking what categories they were under. I’m not a prolific poster but it was rather boring to say the least, even with a relatively small number of posts.

When I look back, at times, I have made the strangest choices for categories and some really silly mistakes that I have now edited and corrected, so all posts should at least be under a relevant category.

Are categories that important you may ask? I think they are, and can be useful in guiding you and keeping you on topic. You may not think you have a niche or focus on a particular topic but over time a pattern very often develops based on your personal interests. Many of your readers will come back because of the topics you write about. Stray too far from your niche and your regular readers may go elsewhere.

I may be stating the obvious but categories are like keywords and do shape the nature of your blog and your readership.
